about

This song was born out of a prompt from my wife Danny. I write a lot of "message" songs, but she challenged me to put more of myself into it. "Knocks" is the result of that... and I may have overshot.

"Knocks" is personal and raw, tapping into the sense of exhaustion that we all feel from the intensity of the past few years. It's about how capitalism depletes our energy... and how we respond to it.

It features Andy Santospago on pedal steel guitar and other great musicians of the Boston area: Dave Brophy on drums & percussion, Joe McMahon on bass, and Peter Fernandez on keyboards.

lyrics

LYRICS:

It’s hard to tell these days what’s true
We fight each other over what to do

It’s all opinion, in my view
That’s how it’s written, I don’t get to choose

Another scripted surprise... and
That lift you get when you cut me down to size
A pang of heartache standing in for each goodbye

How many knocks do we have to take?
How many knocks before we answer our fate?

I think I know how this should feel
And this ain’t it but it presents as real
A pang of heartache knowing what it might reveal

How much effort do we have to make?
How much effort til we carry our weight?

Though you can only see my eyes
I can hardly breathe through this disguise
A pang of heartache for every line left unrevised

How many knocks do we have to take?
How many knocks before we answer our fate?

Now here comes that feeling again
I recognize it by its intent
A pang of heartache mixed in with some discontent
I hear it knocking but no one’s really in suspense
I wrote the script for it so I know just what it represents:

All the effort that we have to make
But how much effort til we feel it start to break?

Feel it start to break
Feel it start to break
Feel it start to break
